With the neighboring towns of Burlingame to the north and Belmont to the south, San Mateo is perhaps the most traditional of mid-Peninsula cities. And as one of the larger suburbs on the San Francisco Peninsula, the city stands out with its long history and wide spectrum of neighborhoods. Downtown retains a historic feel and is fairly large, offering great restaurants, shops and theaters. San Mateo's many pre-World War II neighborhoods have a broad range of styles and prices, and have aged gracefully.
